We are writing at the end of what has been a very successful trip even though it was very different from our plans. Our 4 trainings at Mubende Hospital and Mbarara Hospital went very well. We trained nearly 200 nursing leaders and midwives. Much of our training was brand new content and they were very happy to receive it.
We were never able to secure a meeting with the Ministry of Health, so we called on one of them, ended up being connected with the Midwifery Commissioner (who we knew) and had a 2-hour meeting with 5 MOH members. Three of them had attended one of our trainings previously and one said, “Life has never been the same after your teaching”. A fabulous meeting.
Many things were very providential. Coming across a poorly cared for stillborn baby and mother on the labor ward made my teaching the next day very poignant. Hearing stories from our leaders of mothers who were alive after using skills that Lynn had taught them was inspiring.
For the first time we gathered our Uganda leaders together for a day and a half workshop. Their photos appears with this blog. They became a wonderful team who now can consult each other and take our trainings throughout the country this year. They were well equipped and eager. Our hope is that this will be the future of our program.
We left Uganda this year here having a possible plan for next year, 2027, with a beautiful site to hold conferences. Probably our biggest achievement is in securing a printer who can print all our documents in Uganda. We also have a wonderful partner in Uganda who now purchases our headlamps and batteries. This means that we do not have to take 9- 50 lb. bags with us ever again!
We are tired, but very happy. We again, reminded them of you, and how instrumental you are to Birth With Dignity. When we say this, they always applaud. I wish that you could hear it!
Thank you,
Lynn and Sue
